THE CLEVER COCK
A dog and a cock decided to go on a journey
together. They were travelling through a forest when night fell. The dog went
to sleep at the foot of the tree, the cock in the branches above.
The crow crowed at its usual hour to welcome the
dawn. Its cry awoke a fox who lived nearby. He hurried to the wood, and began
to praise the cock’s voice. He said, “I beg you to come down from the tree.”
The cock understood the fox’s trick and said, “I
will come down if you first ask the watchman to open the door.
The fox foolishly did as he was told. The dog
awoke and growled. He quickly chased the fox away. The cock and the dog
continued their journey in safety.
